Parents eagerly await the annual list of top toys for Christmas from the Toy Retailers Association. Does this year's list reflect tighter budgets & which toys do best?

Anticipating which products will be the top toys for Christmas is a headache for many parents. Knowing what will be "hot" before it sells out can make the difference between a happy kid and a disappointed one. The annual Toy Retailers Association's list of best-sellers can be a great help for parents at this time of year. So, which toys may make up their "Dream Dozen" for 2009?

The Top Toys for Christmas Dream Dozen

The Toy Association puts together predicted lists of best-selling toys for:

  • Girls
  • Boys
  • Pre-schoolers
  • Games
  • Construction
  • Creative

From these primary lists they build their Dream Dozen. These twelve toys and games often end up being the must-have Christmas gifts for many children. Savvy parents will, therefore, often use the list to help guide them in their Christmas shopping. This year's list comprises:

  1. Bakugan Battle Pack
  2. Battle Strikers Starter Set
  3. Ben 10 Alien Force Kevins DX Action Cruiser
  4. Bendaroos Mega Pack
  5. GO GO Pets Hamsters
  6. GX Racers Tightrope Terror
  7. Kidizoom Multimedia Digital Camera
  8. LEGO Games Minotaurus
  9. Monopoly City
  10. Princess Peppa's Palace
  11. Sylvanian Families Caravan
  12. Transformers Movie 2 Voyagers Figures

For many years parents have been faced with top toys coming with top prices. The current economic climate, however, seems to be reflected in this sector this year.

Cheaper Prices for Top Christmas Toys 2009

Many consumers are having to tighten their belts on general spending this year, never mind on their Christmas shopping. The good news is that this year's list of top toys shows that this is a general trend and parents won't necessarily have to pay high costs for the most desirable toys and games.

For example, this year's Dream Dozen list has:

  • Two toys with a recommended retail price of under £10 (Battle Strikers and Go Go Pet Hamsters).
  • No toys with a recommended retail price of over £50.
  • An average price of just over £26 within the top 12 toys and games.
  • Eight toys of the twelve coming in at under £25.

This trend is reflected across all of the lists compiled by the Association. The only exceptions to the rule are the LEGO City Garage, its Power Miners Titanium Command Rig and the Playmobil Pyramid, all of which have an RRP of £59.99.

Cutting Costs of Christmas Toy and Gift Shopping

Bear in mind that the recommended retail price is not the cost that has to paid for any item. Shopping around may help parents find cheaper deals and offers, especially if they shop online. Being careful to save on Christmas spending generally may also be useful. Those looking for other options may find "How to Buy Top Toys & Games for Xmas Under £10" useful.
