Holiday Christmas Countdowns With City, Castle and Pirate Themes

Nov 3, 2009 Tricia Edgar

Children who love Lego will adore the Lego Advent Calendars in City, Pirate and Castle themes. Parents will enjoy the hassle-free set-up.

For Lego lovers everywhere, what better way to count down to Christmas than with a Lego advent calendar? These calendars are a novel variation on the chocolate advent calendar, and they’ll excite children who love to create with Lego.

What is in Each Lego Advent Calendar?

The Lego Advent Calendar features 9 mini figures and accessories to go with the figures.

There are 24 days, and the largest lego piece is on the last day. At $30 to $40, the Lego calendar is more expensive than the Playmobil advent calendar, but it requires less time to put together. In fact, parents can simply take it out of the box, and it’s ready to go! The 2009 Lego City Advent contains holiday items like a snowman, sled, and a little person with ice skates.

Lego also has a holiday countdown calendar. This candle advent calendar is suitable for those who would like to celebrate Christmas in a more traditional way, with a Lego twist. Each layer on the calendar represents a day of Advent.

Past Lego Advent Calendars

Past calendars include the Castle, Clikits, Belville and the different years of the Lego City Advent Calendars. Those who are looking for less expensive past versions of the calendars should look to the City calendars first, since they are the most widely available and are therefore the least expensive to buy the next year.

How to Buy Lego Advent Calendars

Aside from the City Lego Advent Calendar, the many different Lego advent calendars are often unavailable in the United States. Most of the sets are available in the UK, Australia, and much of continental Europe. The Castle Advent Calendar became available in the United States in 2008, and the debate rages about whether the Pirates Advent Calendar will be available for 2009.

The City calendar is available at the Amazon and Lego web sites as well as online toy retailers like Toys R Us. Amazon also has links to resellers who have previous versions of the calendars starting at $35 US. The UK and European versions of the calendars are also available on Ebay and Amazon, and they tend to retail for $70 and up.

Other Lego Christmas Products

Lego has a line of Christmas-themed packages for building. These include a Lego snowman, a Christmas tree, and a Santa keychain. There is also a Cool Santa package that features a Santa on skis, a snowmobile, and a snowboard! The Lego Holiday Ornament set has three Lego figures that fit into balls for the Christmas tree. Quantities are limited.

Lego advent calendars are an exciting and child-friendly way to start the holiday season. Although there is a limited selection in the United States, additional calendars are available online. Families can also purchase Lego Christmas items like snowmen and the more traditional candle advent calendar.
