In the largest toy recall for Mattel since 1998, Fisher Price is recalling almost one million toys because of high lead levels.

Eighty-three different types of toys - including items from the Dora the Exporer, Big Bird and Diego character lines - are being recalled by Fisher Price today because of high lead levels in the toys' paint.

The recall, which covers all toys made under the Fisher Price umbrella, is for all plastic preschool toys manufactured by a Chinese vendor for Fisher Price from May to August of 2007.

General Manager of Fisher Price David Allmark stated to Associated Press that the high lead paint levels were detected by internal spot checks and were immediately reported to the Consumer Product Safety Association, whose role is to recall any toys that fall within the unsafe guidelines. Currently, any toy that has more than 0.06 percent lead in it's accessible parts is considered too high.

Allmark also stated that more than two-thirds of the toys falling under this high lead warning were removed from shelves before consumers got their hands on them, but for parents to take caution anyway and remove any suspect toys immediately from their children's rooms or play areas.

Initially, Fisher Price's recall for the high lead toys was supposed to start on Thursday, August 2nd, 2007, allowing companies carrying Fisher Price stock to remove items from their shelves and for the company to get their recall phone lines up and running. News agencies however got wind of the news and carried the story a day earlier.

The last time Fisher Price had to recall toys was in 1998, when more than ten million Power Wheels toys were removed from shelves. This particular toy recall follows toy maker's RC2Corp. recall of a million and a half wooden railroad toys and parts in June of 2007.

Owners of these high lead toys can receive a voucher for a free item of the same value and have their questions answered by calling Mattel's toy recall hotline, at 1-800-916-4498.
